11:18 the side it's like kind of like an angel through a micro fund uh in like the last five years in roughly I don't know 100 105 companies something

11:28 like that okay like way too many way too many so why am I doing this currently I'm basically

11:36 retired this year I want to start a new project currently I'm only investing so I have a little

11:41 bit like more time to experiment with stuff the thing thing with me is I don't like to jump on calls with founders where I don't know

11:50 much about the sector and I think I won't invest.

11:56 So I don't want to waste that time.

11:57 So very frequently, by default, I reject 99% of calls.

12:03 But there's a lot of really, really good talent out there

12:06 that I think needs, like should get more exposure,

15:35 weird stuff. Global work, niche technology, space tech, sci-fi, anything that's kind of cool and

15:40 anything that's a little bit like off the beaten path of what's currently hype, what's currently like hot and all this kind of stuff.

15:46 I don't like the trend of investors just like rushing after certain hot topics.

15:53 I try to stay away of this as much as possible.

15:56 If everybody invests into something, most likely there's no more alpha,

15:59 nothing left for it anymore.

16:02 Anyway, things that I usually like are things that are very unique and are able to get mindshare i quickly want to show you a few things of my

16:09 investments i did in the past so that you kind of get a feeling all of that is first round the first

16:13 check so for example i was first around remote.com global hiring platform highly recommend you using

16:20 it if you are hiring anywhere globally i also recommend you using it even if you don't because they can run your whole payroll even just for your local company. Luma Labs, AI for 3D,

16:33 basically photorealistic 3D renderings based on a few videos. They can also do text to 3D. It's

16:40 the closest thing I know to digital sorcery to be honest. Acquire.com, quick shout out.

16:46 If your company doesn't work, that's a good place to sell it.

27:19 Beam will then fetch from linear and show me the tasks I have to complete. And these are all, it presumes

27:26 I can get these done before the day I'm leaving. So yeah, that's Beam.

27:32 That's pretty cool. How did you technically build this? What's the stack? What did you

27:39 So Beam is built on, well, the actual AI. Right now, this is just Grok, because Grok's fast, but I'm also the main LLM powering beam is Claude, Claude 3 Opus. And so we fetch upon the Bing

27:55 API, and we read the top eight web results. And if they fail, it won't include it in its

28:00 response. So we've only had four that have worked here. And that's probably they're just blocking blocks or something. And so this right now, the to do lists are

28:11 just just, you know, they're, what's the word? Basically, they're not integrated with any

28:18 other services. But I'd like to be able to build integrations with things like Todoist and stuff like that.

28:27 The calendar, we're just using a normal, sorry, not the calendar.

28:32 Yes, well, the calendar, we use Google Calendar.

28:34 So we can integrate with your Google Calendar.

28:37 So you can see tasks you need to get done.

28:39 So you can, this doesn't work right now, but at some point in the future,

28:43 you'll be able to ask Beam, you know, what dates my free?

28:46 And it'll show you a snap of your calendar and stuff like that.

28:49 It can read your calendar right now, but we don't have an interface to display that yet.

30:33 this with my team to make sure we can actually fulfill blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I was

30:37 like sweating, you know, and there was no team, obviously it was just like trying to get out of

30:41 the meeting and then afterwards be like, okay, I can you know yeah i love that that's great um so regarding investment um why do you want

30:50 to invest money you basically said you want to hire a few people this is this is correct

30:54 exactly yeah so i'd like to expand beam to other platforms um you know i um i i use my phone quite

31:01 a lot as quite a lot of people do um and I'd like to build out an iOS app,

31:05 because right now, Beam only exists on the web.

31:08 And I think we've got powerful APIs that we can use,

31:12 so a lot of it would just be building an app out.

31:17 And yeah, I think there's a lot of potential here,

31:20 I believe at least, where I'm biased.

31:27 which um an ai platform which before which which does this um and i i believe it to be quite unique

34:53 If you make trillions of dollars in revenue, your company is successful no matter who you are. Or if you previously started SpaceX, it honestly doesn't matter how far you executed so far or how great the idea is. The founder of Instagram can launch a news app.

34:59 The cat doesn't matter. For you, why this is interesting here is for two

35:06 things. Number one, the problem that you have is there's like the whole space of like AI

35:12 is currently extremely noisy. There's like dozens of people doing this, right? And there's

35:16 thousands of people doing like this assistant in AI kind of idea. Do you know what I mean? Yeah. The problem you have is if I invest in this, you know,

35:28 I don't know how different this actually is. Like, is this different enough that you can

35:32 get mind share? Okay. And this brings me to my second concept. And then I go back to the

35:39 other one. Okay. Like, imagine this is a human brain.

35:45 Okay. This looks a little bit different, but like you get the idea.

35:50 I strongly believe that we have boxes in our brain.

35:56 So when I tell you project management software, there will be like five things that come up

36:04 Like you will think of like linear, Jira, and like three, four others, you know? People who don't

36:09 work professionally with project management software can think of two or three, okay?

36:13 The problem you have usually is like, I think of this as mindshare, okay? Like mindshare for a

36:20 certain topic, a term, a theme, okay? For example, in your case, AI assistance. The problem you have,

36:27 there's already a lot of stuff in here. Which also means from the point of an investor,

36:34 how innovative is this? And also, if there's many things that can already be compared to,

36:40 and it's a very noisy market, is the innovation strong enough that you will actually

36:45 be like one of those that outlie? Usually there's two ways around this. Number one is just like

36:53 execute, execute, execute. Number two is what people think of as niching, which I don't really

37:00 like as a term. It's like trying create like a specific separate box, you know.

37:06 This is why you see stuff like, hey, there is Calendly, you know,

37:11 and there is like hundreds of other scheduling tools.

37:15 And then people come up with open source Calendly, you know what I mean?

37:20 And open source Calendly mean that those that you can like self-host, change the code, whatever,

37:24 like all of a sudden there's like a new box. And open source calendly mean that those that you can like self-host, change the code, whatever,

37:27 like all of a sudden there's like a new box.

37:33 And now it's about, it's like, hey, I have a new box, which is like open source calendar software.

37:39 And now the question is only, do I believe you that this box is interesting enough?

37:42 Do I believe you that this box is like, has an an opportunity can be big enough and so on and so on so quite frequently it's like this is like

37:54 be bigger than the other box you know I mean um okay completely unrelated so um regarding

38:01 fundraising the main feedback you will get is that this is very similar to a lot of other

38:05 stuff you know i mean yeah okay and usually and i guess you have seen this um you have most likely

38:14 experienced this as a developer you program something and then you see exactly the same

38:19 features in a completely different product that charges like 5x because they sell it to lawyers.

38:25 You know what I mean?

38:26 Yeah.

38:26 And they slightly position it different.

38:28 Like it's not like an upload form.

38:30 It's like a secure data storage or something like that.

38:32 But it's technically just an upload form, you know?

38:36 Yeah.

38:37 So it's all about like in the end, a little bit about positioning.

38:40 All of that being said, to get into a power position,

38:43 my suggestion is to see if you can like slightly create a new box, niche, topic focus.

38:51 Which one? I don't know. That's something you know better than I.

38:53 That's like you talk to your users.

38:56 And that could help you to stand a little bit out.

38:59 And then it's a little bit easier to stand out.

39:46 In your case, you have a really interesting story because you're so young.

40:08 tell to press, all this kind of stuff. So realistically there is a chance that you can

40:17 raise just because of the age and the fact that what you built so far is pretty much awesome.

40:29 all the edge cases but like it's somewhere you know i mean um yeah thank you so that's my thinking

40:36 okay if you're looking for um investment what i would do is i would look for funds that are very

40:41 very comfortable with super early stage. Okay?

47:47 myself and then jump into here um that way that so so by the way uh the idea here is not pitching

47:53 the idea is feedback for the pitch deck okay so everybody just like context okay cool you go

48:00 yeah so a little background about me and the team. So for myself, started in tech as a project manager, moved into sales and revenue roles to learn that side of the business and then move back into product at a product consultancy where we built zero to one early stage products for other startups.

48:18 Basically, the goal for me was always to make myself well-rounded, so understand how to build things, understand how to sell them.

48:25 So I could start my own company one day.

48:27 The idea for Talisman came from my last company that I was in a revenue role.

48:32 I was a director of sales and we were starting to hire quite a bit.

48:37 And the problem that we always ran into was getting new hires set up in the different

48:41 systems that we needed them set up into so that they could get off and running. And the problem was the company had, you know, different people sit in my seat,

48:50 sit in other seats. So it was really, nobody was keeping track of, you know, what tools did we have?

48:55 Who was the different admins for all these tools and what was going on with that?

48:59 So my CEO sent me kind of solve this problem with software was the initial thought. And what we found was

49:05 there were different tools that you could use. So for like the spend piece, there were tools out

49:10 there, but a lot of them were marketed toward mid-market and the entry point for some of these

49:14 tools was higher than we had an appetite for. At the time, this is like two, three years ago,

49:20 it was like a minimum of like 15K for some of these spend analysis tools. And

49:25 then you also would then need to get like an Okta or some other access management tool to then

49:31 manage the access pieces. And then to even use Okta, you need to have a single sign-on licenses

49:37 or a single sign-on capable licenses. So we would then have had to upgrade all of the tools that we

49:44 were using to be single sign-on licenses. So, the whole entire thing was going to end up being really expensive to be able to automate this process for a company at the time that had 60 people.

50:04 like an IT guy to come in and actually handle this because it was cheaper to do that. So our CEO brought in like a IT guy who was getting paid like 60K a year. And the first thing that he did

50:09 was reconcile all of our tools. And he found $100,000 in tools that had been purchased by

50:14 engineering, marketing, and sales over the past five or six years that we were still paying for

50:20 that were no longer being used. And that kind of made the problem kind of stand out in my eyes.

50:26 I'd already noticed this as a problem, but then when I saw that and I was like, yeah, we really

50:31 struggled to solve this problem. So that's when me and the team started working on this effectively.

50:35 And then we did a beta release and then we released on product on February 29th. So

50:42 about 30 days ago.

50:45 We got second for product of the day

50:48 and first for SaaS product of the month with the release.

50:52 And the first release is really just focused

50:53 on the spend management aspects.

50:56 So helping companies for free manage their SaaS stack

50:59 from a cost perspective.

52:25 to build for the past two years is we're thinking of it as a system of record and action for SaaS.

52:30 So the piece is, you know, what do you have? Not only that, but what are you spending and who's

52:36 using it? And then action would be I can add and remove users, right? Which is that SSO piece. So

52:43 the trends that we're seeing on this is you know this

52:45 one's pretty obvious like sas is growing um but when you really look at how companies are managing

52:52 and kind of using these different apps it hasn't changed dramatically even though they're using

52:58 more apps than ever right because basically most most businesses are running off of SaaS. And one of the issues is a singular system of record and action doesn't really exist,

53:11 especially for SMB and mid-market.

53:14 Things are kind of in silos, right?

53:16 So there's the evaluation step, which for me, when I was leading that revenue team,

53:20 I was taking a look at G2 Crowd and tools like that to figure out what tool

53:26 we should be buying. For example, I was tasked with finding a new CRM and that ended up being

53:30 like a six to seven week process because I had to figure out like what are our requirements,

53:35 you know, what tools are going to play well with our existing marketing stack,

53:39 that kind of thing. And then once we actually purchased the tool, then we have to figure out

53:44 if we're going to pay for SSO level licenses so we can use a tool like Okta, or do we end up just using like a

53:50 one password or something like that? And then the actual purchasing itself, there are tools for that.

53:57 But for us, we didn't even use one. We just more directly worked with the vendor itself. But right now, these are really three different product classes.

54:08 So how do you, by the way, we're doing a little bit too much of a pitch and too little of

54:12 pitch feedback, okay?

54:14 Because people hear like pitches like everywhere, you know?

54:18 And I think also for you, because you have like an investor call in like 10 minutes,

54:23 like let's make sure this is useful for you

54:25 for me to understand uh very quickly okay uh do i get this right that your app doesn't need sso

54:31 and you directly log in into the different sas tools um and through that like basically you have

54:36 like i assume like some uh headless browser you log in through like the headless browser you get

54:40 the information through that is this correct that? That's correct. Okay, awesome.

54:46 Do you also do anything around procurement?

54:49 So like somebody needs like a new tool,

54:51 can ask internally, get like the information?

58:20 the market pool can still get you at least far enough that you have a chance to succeed

58:32 and everybody is like looking at it is like yeah it's basically like the other thing

58:37 you know and answer recommending the other things to their friend you know i mean so the main trick

58:44 that i found for launching products

58:46 and early stage product in general is like positioning.

58:49 Like same tech, slightly different position.

58:52 The one thing that I would try in the beginning,

58:54 because the space that you're pitching is really noisy,

58:56 like SaaS management, cost management, procurement.

58:59 This is a noisy space, you know, and it still gets funding.

59:02 It's not like a space that's like I would say done,

59:05 but it's a very noisy space. So what I would try in the very beginning is like

59:09 the two, three things that make you very different, just like show them directly if you can.

59:15 You know what I mean? Let's jump in here. Like what are the two, three things that make you very different?

59:21 Yeah, I think it's the read-write approach with kind of what you alluded to, like how

59:26 we're going to pull in data and then also make actions.

59:30 Because right now, precisely, you just, yeah, I think that's the biggest key.

59:37 Because right now for companies, their main option is like you do have to go pay for those

59:42 more expensive licenses.

59:43 Yeah, it's horrible.

59:44 To be able to, yeah.

59:47 Like, SaaS basically is, like, very, very affordable, very affordable, very affordable.

01:00:34 the fees just make it insane yeah makes sense so let's not jump into if sso makes sense or not like

01:00:40 there is arguments for its security and so on and so on. It should be actually something people don't charge extra for. But the main advantage that you have is if I'm an SMB,

01:00:49 and I have a smaller startup, and I have dozens of tools, I can use you, log in, and all of a

01:00:55 sudden still see the stuff. Okay, cool. That's difference number one. Is there another difference?

01:01:00 The other differentiator that we have is we're combining the three kind of core things from a SaaS flows perspective, like the ability to evaluate what it is that you want and then the ability to manage it once you purchase it.

01:01:17 What does this mean?

01:01:19 So managing is like add and remove users, see who's using it, all of that data in the same place that you can add and remove users, see who's using it,

01:01:25 all of that data in the same place that you can add and remove them.

01:01:29 With Octa, I can see who my users are,

01:01:34 if I have that enough paid for SSO,

01:01:36 but I can't attribute cost as I'm doing that too.

01:01:40 Our tool, effectively, if I'm adding somebody,

01:01:43 I also see exactly how much i just spent

01:01:53 or how much i just saved by taking x action all in like one view um and this is a yeah

01:01:58 okay this makes sense um how many of your competitors already doing this

01:02:04 uh like number one and two for number one and two. For number one, there's one that just announced that they will start to do it in the coming

01:02:12 months where they said like in the next few years.

01:02:15 But no, basically one has talked about doing it.

01:02:20 None are currently doing it.

01:02:22 And then for number two, the way that they do this is through integrations.

01:02:27 So basically you would buy a spend platform and then the spend platform has an Okta integration.

01:02:31 And then that's kind of how they would do that piece.

01:02:36 But it's not like it's, you would have to have an integration with an SSO provider to do number two right now.

01:48:38 happening in the background? Is this running locally? Is this running to a server?

01:48:41 So everything apart from the model itself is running locally. I have had it

01:48:45 running locally. Like when I go on flights, I set up a Lama CPP model and I run it locally. It's

01:48:49 just a little slow and it's also not that good. And so the kind of end user product experience

01:48:54 I'm aiming at is definitely still cloud models, but everything else is local. So I don't store

01:48:59 any of the memory, any of the data that I'm picking up anywhere and all the APIs don't store

01:49:04 it either. So you have to be sort of comfortable in trusting that their public policy is, like,

01:49:09 correct, as they say it. They're not storing the data. As long as you're comfortable with

01:49:13 that, then that's kind of okay.

01:49:14 And I've seen a button you can switch to the local LLM as well, if there's one.

01:49:18 Yeah, these are the dev buttons. So these aren't actually for prod, but it's for me

01:49:23 that I can switch to local LLM. There'll be a point where local LLMs are so good that it is totally worth doing local.

01:49:28 And I'll probably get to that point in a couple of months with a couple more like random open source releases.

01:49:32 When you aren't triggering it, it won't do anything unless you've got autocomplete on.

01:49:38 Autocomplete will be pulling the contacts as you type and sending it to get the responses and stuff.

01:50:23 What do you think is the biggest challenge?

01:50:25 So right now, I would say there's two challenges I'm focused on.

01:50:31 One is just kind of getting enough growth in the top of the funnel.

01:50:35 I've never really done that before.

01:50:36 And I'm starting to it now and it's kind of going okay.

01:50:38 So got that got like the beginnings of that started, but it is just me working on it.

01:50:42 I'm mostly a technical guy.

01:50:44 So learning and

01:50:45 figuring out how to do growth in an efficient way that pays back its money. Then secondly,

01:50:51 actually changing people's habits, like in the onboarding and also just generally reminding

01:50:56 them that there's this now a totally new option. You can just kind of, instead of typing the full

01:51:01 response, you just ask the AI to do it. That is sort of a different way of

01:51:06 working, you know, and obviously people are used to going to chat dbt and back. And so this sort

01:51:11 of chat thing is just a drop in replacement for that. So that's relatively straightforward.

01:51:15 But the in-context generation, which I think is super powerful, you know, it took me like a few

01:51:19 months of having it available to start kind of trying it out in every email and all of that kind

01:51:24 of stuff. So yeah, trying to figure out great, compelling onboarding that gets

01:51:28 people into that habit.

01:51:32 How many users do you currently have?

01:51:34 I've got about 30-something daily active. I've got about 600, 700 of MRR, something

01:51:44 like that.

01:51:45 Do you know what they use it most for?

01:51:47 Most of these sort of emails, and then some people are using it for writing docs

01:51:53 and just quickly generating a paragraph about this, paragraph about that.

01:51:57 And then there's about maybe six or seven who are Xcode devs who are just like, oh,

01:52:01 my God, the fact that I can now generate code and autocomplete code and xcode is like very very like wow i don't feel like a second class citizen

01:52:12 i i still can't believe that this is like another thing uh how many coming probably in june so you

01:52:17 know this is a small window yeah but that's like a few months um so my my number one advice here

01:52:22 is let's let's look at this as like from the point of view of

01:52:25 the business that wants to make money and not necessarily like a VC case. The VC case here is

01:52:31 like there's hundreds of assistants right now and I will do the same feedback I gave before about

01:52:40 positioning, niching, noise in the market, and how is this different?

01:52:45 It's really hard to invest in this.

01:52:48 But this is an awesome thing to make money.

01:52:52 Because you've got already all the hard stuff done.

01:52:55 It technically works,

01:52:56 and now you can figure out different use cases for it.

01:53:08 this is all like okay you do whatever you think is right if you end up successful you were right
