This extended intro though.

7 ads, good lawd. And yeah, been a while. Gotta build the audience back up.

have no idea what you are yappin about, but no one cares about anyone's experience except your mom.

the frogman says you are in imposter

spiro 👋
C
Caravaggio
rubber meets the road?
S
six_string_surgeon
I think Jonathan Blow had a rant along these lines saying that devs today deserve to feel imposter syndrome
L
lemnean
I like this new Spiro
L
lemnean
He is like an enlightened sith lord
C
Caravaggio
is it a symptom of incompetency in the educational/training sphere??
L
lemnean
Yes, harness your anger
L
lemnean
the dependency graph is the root of all evil
L
lemnean
Spiro has been node pilled
L
lemnean
I am proud
C
Caravaggio
you would make a great mentor/educator Spiro 🔥

We can call this hypothetical product manager 'Kanye'

KPI count is a good KPI
C

moldy you sum of a gum 👍 how the heck are you?
M
Moldy Apple
👌
L
lemnean
A lot of MBA bullshit is just a defense mechanism to make people who are largely superfluous feel less so
L
lemnean
for programmers it is bloated frameworks
L
lemnean
soon you will be comrade Spiro
L
lemnean
o/
L
lemnean
The problem with 'making things easier for junior developers' is it breeds a morass of complexity peddled by self interested framework shills
C
Caravaggio
every crisis is an opportunity 🤔 how do we get rich from this ??
C
ChiefMultiHat
I get impostor syndrome once in a while, but I doubt it's like everyone else's. After 30+ years of software development, seeing old ideas regurgitated as new and so much dead branch knowledge I just have my moments... mainly due to this agile poop as of late..
L
lemnean
I love you cult member spiro <3
L
lemnean
and welcome you to the new anti cult cult with great zeal
L
lemnean
woe betide the man who understands the npm run stack
L
lemnean
The problem is scaling. You need some level of 'sysadmin knowledge' in order to rent the compute to actually run it
L
lemnean
If you are a mom and pop shop selling viral T-Shirts, this isn't really feasible
C
ChiefMultiHat
oof - all those are classes etc in 1 program.
L
lemnean
Written like a true java programmer

Every uncle bob produces an anti bob 20 years down the line
L
lemnean
I don't think it is even a 'feel good' thing a lot of the time. Every time I fire up a docker container I am filled with revulsion
C
ChiefMultiHat
Have you seen Microsoft Power Automate? Too bad so many enterprise architects just say - learn this process so we all can do it. I say - write a console app to run 10x faster.
L
lemnean
Ok, but the mom and pop shop still needs to understand what 'load' is and that f they want the system to automatically scale up it will cost a pretty penny. You would also need some way to spin up a bunch of machines which would be much less efficient than the shopify model (of which I am not a fan)
H
Hasen Judi
"Load" for most blog-like websites is like 10k concurrent visitors which is not even 100 req/s. Really easy to handle actually.
H
Hasen Judi
Hi
H
Hasen Judi
Thanks
L
lemnean
I agree that a lot about the current models can be simplified (and there are some attempts to do this), but there is a fundamental complexity floor which muggles will probably never cross
L
lemnean
blogs are low hanging fruit
L
lemnean
I agree
L
lemnean
because no one reads them :)
L
lemnean
the bursty cases (virality) are more interesting
M
Moldy Apple
what do you know about speed anyway??
G
ghostm4gic
hi
L
lemnean
sadly I have to watch the ad :(
H
Hasen Judi
xD
H
Hasen Judi
The more you get paid the more responsibility you have to not complain about garbage DX. Like, can you imagine being paid $20k/mo as a consultant and then complain about next.js or docker?
L
lemnean
back
G
ghostm4gic
twitch thinks your viewers are rich if it serves so many ads, thanks twitch :)
L
lemnean
The bursty case doesn't really accommodate that though. You really don't want your server going down after an influx of order because of some viral event over which you have no control.
H
Hasen Judi
"future cash flow"
H
Hasen Judi
Something I also noticed: hiring more developers makes it easier to raise more VC cache
H
Hasen Judi
So as an employee of a VC company, the value you provide to the company is not the work you do per se
H
Hasen Judi
it's the appearance of doing important complicated work
L
lemnean
The flaw with your argument is that the way to eliminate most technical debt also involves eliminating a large number of developers who don't add value
L
lemnean
so the gains accrue to the corporations
L
lemnean
not to their employees doing bullshit work
L
lemnean
a lot of development work exists because developers are just grossly inefficient
P
phrackery
SIR! my good sir! good to see you
P
phrackery
nope
P
phrackery
its better to work on creating a product and going out on your own
H
Hasen Judi
it is
L
lemnean
because my subjective experience yields objective results 😎
L
lemnean
or you could just use go and avoid both problems
L
lemnean
it's like 5 lines bro
P

go is where the jobs at right? RIGHT?
L

sorry my connection dropped for am inute

I don't know about you bro, but I hand craft my syscalls in cat
L

I won't forfeit any control to the man
L
lemnean
the man just wants to keep you down

there were like 5 guys still using QT in 2016 and they were all KDE devs
